Taxi in Mulanje

Mount Mulanje rises abruptly out of the tea country of southern Malawi to just over 3,000 metres, and it dominates everything around it. Hikers come for the plateau huts and the Sapitwa summit; everyone else comes for the tea estates and the scenery on the way in.

From Blantyre the drive is about an hour and a quarter. We deliver climbers to the Likhubula forestry office and the other trailheads early in the morning, and — importantly — arrange the return pickup for a fixed day, which is far more reliable than hoping for transport at the end of a three-day walk.

The area also has a working side: tea estate visits, Mulanje District Hospital, and the border crossing into Mozambique at Muloza. All are covered on the same fixed-fare basis.
