Our Story
Built on airport runs, grown by word of mouth
Phonex Taxi Driver started with a single vehicle and a simple observation: the hardest part of arriving in Malawi was the twenty minutes after clearing customs. Passengers landed at Chileka International Airport tired, without local currency, and negotiating a fare with strangers in a car park.
We built the service around fixing that. Pre-booked transfers with the fare agreed in advance. Flight tracking, so a three-hour delay is absorbed rather than penalised. A driver waiting inside the terminal with a name board. Details of the vehicle and driver sent before travel so anybody, anywhere, can verify who is collecting them.
What began as airport work grew outwards, because clients kept asking. Business travellers wanted a car for their whole day of meetings. Tour operators needed someone dependable to hand their guests to. Families wanted the same driver for the school run and the hospital trip. NGOs needed field vehicles that could handle a project site at the end of a dirt track in February.
Today Phonex Taxi Driver covers the entire country — Blantyre, Limbe, Zomba, Mangochi, Liwonde, Mulanje, Lilongwe, Salima, Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, Karonga and every town in between — while remaining what it always was: a professional driver who answers his own phone.
