It is a fair question and we will try to answer it honestly, including the cases where self-drive genuinely wins. There is no universal right answer — it depends on your trip, your confidence and how much of your time you want to spend concentrating on the road.
The real cost comparison
Self-drive rental looks cheaper because the advertised figure is only the rental. The full cost includes fuel, the insurance excess you carry, any airport surcharge, and — the one people forget — the time you spend driving instead of working or resting.
A car with a driver is quoted as one figure that already includes fuel and the driver. For point-to-point journeys and single days it is frequently cheaper outright. Over a two-week self-drive holiday with a lot of ground to cover, rental usually wins on pure cost.
Driving conditions you should factor in
Malawi drives on the left. Main highways such as the M1 are generally in reasonable condition, but you will share them with minibuses that stop without warning, cyclists carrying improbable loads, pedestrians and livestock.

- Limited street lighting, making night driving genuinely demanding
- Fuel availability that can be intermittent outside the main centres
- Police checkpoints where documentation is checked routinely
- Very limited breakdown recovery outside Blantyre and Lilongwe
When self-drive makes sense
Hire the car yourself if you are staying several weeks, have driven in comparable conditions before, want complete spontaneity, and are comfortable handling a breakdown or a puncture a long way from help. Residents who know the roads and drive daily are also better served by their own vehicle.
When a driver makes more sense
Hire a car with a driver if you are here for a short visit, travelling for business, arriving at night, unfamiliar with the roads, or simply want to look out of the window. It is also the obvious choice for airport transfers, single long-distance journeys and days of meetings.
Three specific advantages are hard to replicate with a rental: the driver knows where the lodge turnoff is, you never have to find or worry about parking, and there is no insurance excess hanging over you if something goes wrong.
The middle option people forget
You can hire a driver for a vehicle you already own or have rented. Expatriates do this constantly: the household keeps its own car, and a vetted driver handles the school run, the commute and the weekend trips. It costs meaningfully less than full car-and-driver hire.
A practical hybrid for visitors
Many of our clients use a driver for the demanding parts of the trip — airport transfers, long-distance legs, night travel — and rent a small car for pottering around a lakeshore resort. It is often the cheapest and least stressful combination.
The question is not really which is cheaper. It is what your time and your peace of mind are worth on the roads you will actually be driving.
