Blantyre is Malawi’s commercial capital and its oldest city, founded by Scottish missionaries in 1876. It is built across hills, which makes it attractive and occasionally confusing: routes that look direct on a map take longer in practice.
Understanding the layout
Blantyre functions as a twin city with Limbe, about seven kilometres apart and effectively continuous. Blantyre holds the administrative and banking district around Victoria Avenue; Limbe carries more of the trade, the main market and the tobacco auction floors.
The residential areas — Namiwawa, Sunnyside, Mandala, Nyambadwe — sit on the hills around the centre. Chichiri, roughly between the two centres, holds the main shopping mall and the museum.
Journey times you can plan around
- City centre to Limbe — 15 to 25 minutes, up to 40 in peak traffic
- City centre to Chileka International Airport — 25 to 35 minutes
- Limbe to Chileka Airport — 35 to 45 minutes
- City centre to Chichiri Mall — 10 minutes
- Blantyre to Zomba — 1 hour 15 minutes
The peaks are roughly 07:00–08:30 and 16:30–18:00 on weekdays. The stretch through Ndirande towards Chileka is the one that catches people out; if you have a flight, build the extra twenty minutes in and be pleasantly surprised.
Your transport options
Minibuses
Cheap, frequent and used by almost everyone. They run fixed routes from known stages, leave when full rather than on a schedule, and are crowded. Fine for short hops if you know the route; not practical with luggage or a deadline.
Taxis
The practical option for visitors and for anyone with a schedule. Fares are agreed rather than metered — settle the price before you get in, every time. A pre-booked taxi from a known operator gives you a fixed fare, a named driver and a vehicle you can identify.
Hiring a driver
For a full day of meetings across Blantyre and Limbe, hourly or full-day hire is usually cheaper than a string of individual trips and considerably less disruptive. The car waits between appointments, your equipment stays locked in the boot, and overruns cost you nothing.
Getting around after dark
Blantyre after dark calls for the same sense you would apply in any city. Street lighting is patchy, and walking between areas at night is not advisable. Use a taxi you have booked rather than one you have flagged down, and keep the driver’s number in your phone.

Blantyre is a city best understood from the passenger seat. Once you stop worrying about the roads, it becomes a very easy place to like.
