Chileka International Airport (IATA: BLZ) serves Blantyre and the whole of southern Malawi. It is a small, manageable airport — which is good news for arriving passengers, provided you have organised your onward transport before you land.
Where the airport is
Chileka sits roughly 15 kilometres north-west of Blantyre city centre. In practical terms the drive takes 25 to 35 minutes in normal conditions and can stretch towards 50 minutes during the morning and evening peaks, when traffic through Chileka and Ndirande builds up.
Limbe, Blantyre’s twin commercial centre, is about 20 kilometres from the terminal — allow 35 to 45 minutes. Zomba is around 80 kilometres and roughly an hour and a half.
Arriving at Chileka
The arrivals process is straightforward. You will pass through immigration, collect your bags from a single reclaim area, clear customs and walk out into a compact arrivals hall. From wheels-down to walking out typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on how full the flight was.
Visas
Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, and an e-visa system is also available. Check the current requirements with the Malawian immigration authorities before you travel, and have your accommodation address written down — you will be asked for it on the arrival card.
Money and connectivity
Facilities at the terminal are limited, so do not count on a working ATM or a currency exchange desk. It is worth asking your driver to stop at an ATM or a forex bureau on the way into town. The same applies to a local SIM card — Airtel and TNM outlets in Blantyre will register a SIM for you in a few minutes, and you will need your passport.
Arranging your transfer
Pre-booking is strongly recommended. Chileka is not an airport with an endless taxi rank, and after a wave of arrivals disperses the options thin out very quickly — particularly late at night.
A pre-booked transfer should include, as standard:
- Flight tracking, so a delay does not become your problem
- A driver waiting inside arrivals with a name board
- A fixed fare confirmed in writing before you fly
- Luggage assistance from the terminal to the vehicle
- Driver name, phone number and vehicle registration sent in advance
Departing from Chileka
For international departures, aim to be at the terminal three hours before your scheduled time. For domestic flights, 90 minutes is comfortable. Then add the real road time for that hour of the day.
In practice, a 06:00 international departure means a pickup from central Blantyre at around 03:45. That feels brutally early, but Chileka processes departures through a single security and check-in area and the queue builds fast when two flights are close together.

Connecting to the rest of Malawi
Chileka is a practical starting point for the whole south. Common onward transfers include Zomba (1 hr 30), Liwonde National Park (2 hrs 15), Mulanje (1 hr 30), Mangochi and the southern lakeshore (3 hrs 45), and the full run north to Lilongwe (5 hrs).
For lakeshore lodges in particular, a direct road transfer from the airport is usually simpler than piecing together domestic flights and local transport, and your luggage stays with you the entire way.
If you remember one thing: give your driver the flight number, not just the arrival time. It is the single detail that makes a delayed landing a non-event.
